Housing & rentalMajor loss

Wire transfer only. No viewings. I sent the money.

I needed a flat fast after a breakup and the listing looked clean—bright photos, a rent below market, and a landlord who answered within minutes. They said they were overseas and could only take a wire to hold the place, which should have stopped me cold.

They refused cards, PayPal, or a viewing because of "logistics," and pushed SWIFT or Zelle to a personal name. I rationalised it as how some overseas owners work and sent thousands to beat other applicants I never saw.

Wire-only rent scams move money in seconds; unlike card disputes, there is rarely a chargeback path once the recipient withdraws. The listing vanished, the inbox went quiet, and the bank told me the funds were already gone.

I told myself I was grabbing a deal smarter people would miss. I did not want to lose the slot to someone who would pay faster, so I ignored friends who said legitimate landlords meet tenants or use traceable deposits.

The bank confirmed the beneficiary withdrew immediately and the "owner" blocked every channel I had. That sequence—silent app, dead number—was the moment the bargain turned into fraud in plain language.

I felt naive and angry at myself, and the stress of finding another place while that hole sat in my account lasted months. Recovery was unlikely; the lesson was expensive.

I now insist on traceable rent and proof someone controls the property before I move money. I wish I had walked away the second wire was the only option.

  • Avoid wiring strangers for housing; use verified platforms with escrow-style protections when you can.
  • Report rental fraud to law enforcement and your bank.
